Buddi is one of our puppies. He is pet quality (neutered male) and was sold to what we thought was the ideal home. The owners followed all our advice, got everything necessary to take care of him. The had a huge and very secure backyard. We visited them several times over the year that they had Buddi and always left feeling that it was a "perfect match".
One day, I got a call from a Las Vegas friend telling me that there was a basenji for sale in the paper. (very rare in those days, we were the only local breeders in the state) I had them read the classified to me and the phone number sounded very familiar. I checked and called the owners immediately to find out what was happening. I got the wife on the phone and she informed me that they could not keep Buddi any more. She was expecting another child and her husband had just started his own business. I asked why they hadn't called us. She stated that it was "none of our business" what they did with "the dog". I couldn't believe what I was hearing. (What a drastic change in personality)
I reminded her that they had signed a contract with us. In it was stated that the "breeder of record" (us) had the option of purchasing back a puppy that could no longer properly be cared for. We had put that clause in the contract to prevent our puppies from ending up in the pound. (we would have taken them to court to prevent that) She got mad and hung up on me. The next day, they called back and made arrangements to return Buddi. When they did, they refused to turn over his AKC papers. According to the contract and as far as they were concerned no money was owed. They had gotten rid of their problem, the dog. Buddi had come home to stay.
Yes, we have a nickname for Buddi, too. We call him "Budwiser" (not the beer brand) - the wiser part reflects his self-confident attitude. He is (due to his younger age and good health) our "alpha male" or pack leader. He and Browni constantly challenge each other since it once was Browni's position. They don't hurt each other and spend most of the day together, but when seperated by a fence or cage love to "fence fight". (lots of growling - no one gets hurt)
* = We allow our puppy buyers to name their own puppies. The only requirement is the name Trudol must be part of it. Because we never got AKC paperwork, to this day, we don't know his registered name.
NOTE: In early December of 2005, Browni challenged Buddi for the "alpha" position, which Browni once held. Unknown to us, We think, Browni charged Buddi while was on the porch and knocked him off causing a spinal injury. As the lameness and pain forced Buddi into depression. It became appearent that one of of our younger dogs would be the next to go over the Rainbow bridge..
